Why Cash Flow Matters More Than Headlines
In small acquisitions, the cash an asset actually produces tells you more than the price it traded at.
Private asset ownership builds value through two quiet mechanisms: the cash an asset produces after its obligations are met, and the debt that is retired over the holding period. Neither is dramatic in any single year. Across a full ownership cycle, they do most of the work.
This is an unfashionable position. Transaction-led strategies are easier to narrate, because each purchase and sale is an event with a number attached. Ownership-led strategies produce fewer events and are harder to describe in a single meeting, which is precisely why fewer participants pursue them.
The practical consequence is that entry price matters less than entry structure. An asset bought well but financed badly can still be lost. An asset bought at a fair price, financed conservatively and operated with discipline will usually survive the conditions nobody underwrote for — and surviving is the prerequisite for everything else.
